UNCG awards appropriate credit to undergraduates who have earned a Qualified Advanced Course Examination Score, as defined in the Regulation on Awarding Undergraduate Credit on the Basis of Advanced Course Examination Scores, Section 700.10.1[R] of the UNC Policy Manual.  

The AP section of the Qualified Advanced Course Examination Score Policy went into effect Fall 2019, the IB and Cambridge section of the Policy went into effect Fall 2020. UNCG has determined that students admitted before those dates can still elect to receive the relevant credit.

After achieving a Qualified Advanced Course Examination Score, a student shall be awarded credit hours associated in institutional coursework aligned with the subject content of the relevant Advanced Course examination score.  

Unless an institution has been granted an exception where a higher score may be required, the following shall be the minimum score required to receive college credit:

• A score of three or higher on an AP examination;
• A score of five or higher on a Standard Level IB examination;
• A score of four or higher on a Higher Level IB examination; and/or
• A score of C or higher on a Cambridge A Level or AS Level examination

Institutions are not required to offer Appropriate Credit for every AP, IB, Cambridge A Level, or Cambridge AS Level exam offered; but, if an institution does offer credit for a particular exam, it must offer Appropriate Credit in compliance with the policy.

A student may decline to accept the offered credit. Once credit has been declined, it cannot be reapplied to the student record. 

Elective credit for military training may be awarded where UNCG has comparable courses and upon receipt of an official American Council of Education transcript.

UNCG extension credit, earned either on or off campus, will be considered transfer credit for admission purposes. Up to 64 semester hours in extension and/or correspondence credits may be applied to completion of work for an undergraduate degree. Academic departments may establish such course and credit limitations in acceptance of extension credit as may be required by specific degree programs

Although UNCG extension credit is treated as transfer credit at the time of admission, it will be thereafter considered “Residence” credit for degree certification purposes.

Any UNCG student may earn up to twelve (12) hours of elective credit in physical education activity courses to apply toward graduation.

UNCG is accredited by and will accept transfer credit from schools accredited by the Commission on Colleges, Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACSCOC) . Colleges and universities outside of the SACSCOC region must have accreditation from the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC) Western Association of Schools and Colleges, Higher Learning Commission (HLC), Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE), New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE), Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU), Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC), or WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC) for the transfer credit to be accepted.

Transfer credit to be awarded is determined by the quality as well as the quantity of the student’s previous college work. Course work completed with a grade of C-, D+, D, or D- will not transfer. Transfer courses are evaluated on a course-by-course basis.

The sum total of transfer credit hours from two-year college(s), extension, or correspondence courses that may be applied toward an undergraduate degree may not exceed 64 semester hours. No combination of 2Plus and transfer/extension credit may exceed 64 semester hours on the student’s transfer equivalency worksheet.

The university’s Repeated Course policy (see the Credit Regulations and Limits topic in the Academic Regulations & Policies section of the  University Catalog) applies to transfer credit. If a course or its equivalent is taken more than once for credit and is not repeatable for credit, credit will be applied toward degree requirements only once. In the case of duplicate transfer credit, only the first instance in which credit can be awarded will remain on the UNCG academic record.

Current UNCG policy stipulates that courses completed in technical, vocational, or professional programs at community colleges or courses from technical colleges or proprietary institutions cannot be accepted in transfer, unless they are part of a 2Plus Program. These programs give students with articulated Associate in Applied Science degrees access to a limited number of degrees at UNCG.
