To the May Class of 2020

A Message from Chancellor Gilliam Regarding December Commencement

To the UNCG Class of May 2020:

In the time since you graduated from UNCG 5 months ago, you have navigated an incredibly challenging social, cultural, and economic environment. I hope you are doing well, staying healthy, and finding your way forward. On campus, we hoped that we would begin the new academic year with more of a sense of normalcy, but as you all know, COVID-19 had other plans.

It’s a shame that you didn’t get to celebrate your commencement at a traditional time and in a traditional way.  We would, however, like to invite undergraduate and master’s students to be recognized at our virtual December commencement ceremony on December 11 at 10:00 am. The doctoral hooding ceremony will be in January (date TBD). You share a common bond with those graduating in two months – you all have had to battle through circumstances beyond your control and obstacles beyond our imagination to achieve a lifelong goal. As much as any class in our history, you have earned some recognition, some celebration, and our everlasting respect.

More details will come on the logistics, including ways you can personally participate and make the moment meaningful. We will work with student leaders on plans and provide details on both these ceremonies. While I wish that I could have shaken your hands and watched you turn your tassels as the crowd cheered you on, I believe we can show you how much you mean to us. I hope you will join us for this special day. You earned it!

Thank you, more to come, and as always, Go Spartans!
